Third Sunday of Easter - April 23, 2023 This service will be in-person and on Zoom at 10:00 a.m. (Eastern Time) (Posted for later viewing on Facebook and YouTube) https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88327467219?pwd=Mis3ME4waGE1RmRBNzFXK3VUaDJXdz09 Meeting ID: 883 2746 7219 Passcode: 131738 Silent Prayer Holy Stranger, at times we do not recognize you. We have inherited beliefs that narrow our perceptions. We rely on you, O God, to help us to expand our understanding of the Sacred among us. Stretch us, that we might grow in faith. Challenge us that we might deepen our commitment to love’s strange ways. Amen * Indicates points in the service when we stand in body or spirit Announcements Prelude With Verdure Clad Franz J. Haydn Welcome *Introit Spirit of the Living God R. #281 Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me, Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me. Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me. Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me. Call to Worship One: Followers of Jesus, by his cross we are redeemed from the futility of sin. All: Alleluia! One: By his rising we are free from the fear of death. All: Alleluia! One: By his love we are made new in the living and enduring Word of God. All: Alleluia! Thanks be to God! *Passing of the Peace (ASL) and lighting Peace & Justice Candle *Hymn O Christ, the Great Foundation B. #387 O Christ the great foundation on which your people stand to preach your true salvation in every age and land: Pour out your Holy Spirit to make us strong and pure, to keep the faith unbroken as long as worlds endure. Baptized in one confession, one church in all the earth, we bear Christ’s own impression, the sign of second birth: One holy people gathered in love beyond our own, by grace we were invited, by grace we make you known. Where tyrants' hold is tightened, where strong devour the weak, where innocents are frightened, the righteous fear to speak, There let your church awaking attack the powers of sin and, all their ramparts breaking, with you the victory win. This is the moment glorious when Christ who once was dead shall lead the church victorious, their champion and their head. The Sovereign of creation a new dominion brings, The final consummation, the glory of all things. *Invocation (spoken in unison) Lord, you opened the meaning of the Scriptures to the disciples on the road to Emmaus and set their hearts ablaze. By the power of your Spirit kindle our hearts as we hear your word proclaimed, that we may receive you with joy. Amen Children’s Message Christian Scripture Luke 24:13-35 Special Music - Choir Awake, Thou Wintry Earth Dutch Carol, K.K.Davis Message Rev. TJ Mack *Hymn On the Day of Resurrection R. #213 On the day of resurrection to Emmaus we return; while confused, amazed, and frightened, Jesus comes to us, unknown. Then this stranger asks a question, “What is this which troubles you?” Meets us in our pain and suffering; Jesus walks with us, unknown. In our trouble, words come from him; burning fire within our hearts tells to us the scripture’s meaning, Jesus speaks to us, unknown. Then we near our destination. Then we ask the stranger in, and he yields unto our urging; Jesus stays with us, unknown. Day of sorrow is forgotten when the guest becomes the host. Taking bread and blessing, breaking, Jesus is himself made known. Opened eyes, renewed convictions, journey back to scenes of pain; telling all that Christ is risen, Jesus is through us made known. Prayers of the People – Sharing Joys & Concerns Our Father (Creator, Mother) who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen Lead me Lord, lead me in thy righteousness, make thy way plain before my face. For it is thou Lord, thou Lord, only, that makest me dwell in safety. Invitation to Offering – When we practice what Jesus taught us, we come to recognize God with us. Whether bread or courage, finances or art, we bring our gifts to each other. In this way, the presence of Christ lives among us. Offertory My Redeemer Franklin Ritter *The Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God for all that love has done; Creator, Christ, and Spirit, One. Amen *Prayer of Dedication (spoken in unison) Beloved One, we give you thanks for all the prophets who bring truth to the surface. Help us to linger in their wisdom, even when we are uncomfortable. Give us the courage to listen with hearts open to transformation. Give us the strength to tell our stories through the radical love of Christ. Amen *Hymn ‘Tis the Gift to Be Simple (Simple Gifts) R. #207 'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free, 'tis the gift to come down where we ought to be, and when we find ourselvesin the place just right, 'twill be in the valleyof love and delight. When true simplicity is gained, to bow and to bend we shall not be ashamed, to turn, turn will be our delight 'till by turning, turning, we come round right. *Blessing *Sung Benediction Go, My Children, with My Blessing (v.1) B. #82 Go my children with my blessing, never alone; Waking, sleeping, I am with you, you are my own; In my love’s baptismal river I have made you mine forever, Go, my children, with my blessing, you are my own.
