From the Maine Conference
Beware of SCAMS related to the Lewiston tragedy. In the aftermath of a traumatic event, many want to be of service by making a financial contribution. Unfortunately, scammers know this and are waiting, hoping to take advantage of unsuspecting donors. The safest way to ensure that your money is going to help with immediate or long-term recovery efforts is to give to a reputable, vetted charity. Your Disaster Resource and Response Team wants to remind you that the Maine Conference is accepting donations online and through the mail. We work with trusted partners. When Googling, watch out for names that look similar to known charities. Scammers love to take advantage of our haste and there are deceptive websites out there. Also, watch your email. Sometimes scammers use an email address that looks very similar to what you'd expect, but the font of one or more letters may be different. Never click links you're not expecting— particularly when they are soliciting funds. The Conference will NEVER ask you for money—or gift cards--via direct email or text. If you get an email or text that appears to come from someone in the Conference, do not respond to that communication and do not purchase gift cards. Instead, call or email the person with the number and email address you have for them. Don't give over the phone, either, if you seem to get a call from a Conference official. Scammers can duplicate numbers so that a call may appear to be coming from one place, but actually coming from somewhere else.
