Silent Meditation

This is the paradox. A human is out of nature and hopelessly in it. We are dual. Up in the stars and yet housed in a heart-pumping, breath-gasping body that once belonged to a fish and still carries the gill marks to prove it. A human is literally split in two. We have an awareness of our own splendid uniqueness in that we stick out of nature with a towering majesty, and yet we go back into the ground a few feet in order to blindly and dumbly rot and disappear forever. It is a terrifying dilemma to be in and to have to live with. – Ernest Becker—The Denial of Death

Announcements

Prelude I Will Exalt in the Lord Lani Smith

Welcome

*Call to Worship (spoken in unison)

Happy are those who live in the house of the Lord, ever singing your praise, O God. Happy are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion.

*Hymn Forward through the Ages B. #377

Forward through the ages, in unbroken line, move the faithful spirits at the call divine.

Gifts in differing measure, hearts of one accord, manifold the service, one the sure reward.

Refrain: Forward through the ages, in unbroken line, move the faithful spirits at the call divine.

Wide grows God’s dominion, reign of love and peace; for it we must labor, till all strivings cease. Prophets have proclaimed it, teachers testified, poets sung its glory, martyrs for it died.

Refrain: Forward through the ages, in unbroken line, move the faithful spirits at the call divine.

Not alone we conquer, not alone we fall; in each loss or triumph, lose or triumph all.

Bound by God’s far purpose in one living whole, move we on together to the shining goal.

Refrain: Forward through the ages, in unbroken line, move the faithful spirits at the call divine.

*Invocation (spoken in unison)

Holy God, who calls your people into one beloved community, who teaches us the way of peace through life together, who fills us with visions of your eternal reign: as we now celebrate the communion of saints, pour into our hearts the power of Christ, one of the many who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

Prayers of the People – Sharing Joys & Concerns

Lead me Lord, lead me in thy righteousness, make thy way plain before my face.

For it is thou Lord, thou Lord, only, that makest me dwell in safety.

Invitation to Offering – In sharing ourselves we reflect God’s vision of love and justice for the world. Let us give freely, so that the ministry of Jesus Christ may flourish in this community and beyond.

Offertory We Are Not Our Own Brian Wren – Red Hymnal #380 Soloist – Pat Summerer

*The Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below;

Praise God for all that love has done; Creator, Christ, and Spirit, One. Amen

*Prayer of Dedication (spoken in unison)

Holy One, we ask you to bless these tithes and offerings, that our gifts may embody your vision of the kin-dom and lift those who are vulnerable, oppressed, and seeking justice. Amen

*Hymn My Life Flows On in Endless Song (vs. 1-3) R. #427

My life flows on in endless song; above earth's lamentation, I hear the sweet, though far-off hymn that hails a new creation.

No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that rock I’m clinging. Since Love is Lord of heav’n and earth, how can I keep from singing?

Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear that music ringing. It finds an echo in my soul. How can I keep from singing?

No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that rock I’m clinging. Since Love is Lord of heav’n and earth, how can I keep from singing?

What though my joys and comforts die? I know my Savior’s living. What though the darkness gather round? Songs in the night he’s giving.

No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that rock I’m clinging. Since Love is Lord of heav’n and earth, how can I keep from singing?

*Benediction (spoken in unison) Romans 8:38-39

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen
